Each child I see will be assessed to find out where their strengths and difficulties lie. The way in which your child is assessed will vary depending on the types of difficulties they have and their age. I use a range of formal (published) assessments as well as informal conversation and play-based activities as appropriate for your child. I also take a detailed case history from you.
During the assessment I will look at key areas which are needed for effective communication including:
Attention and listening skills
Ability to understand language
Ability to express their needs
Vocabulary and use of sentences/grammar
Social skills
Play skills
Speech production
Fluency (stammering)
An initial assessment usually lasts between one hour and 90 minutes. I can see your child at home, school or in my clinic room. After assessment I will then write a report outlining your child's skills and areas of difficulty and giving recommendations and advice.
